This project will offer faculty members a new option for incorporating information literacy instruction into their classes by providing specialized training to selected students in their classes. Liaison librarians will invite interested faculty members to identify a small number (probably two to four, depending on the size of the class; about ten mentors total for pilot program) of students in a class for which library instruction would be appropriate. These students will agree to participate in the Library Peer Mentor Program for the spring semester and will work closely with the appropriate liaison librarian to learn skills relevant to objectives and assignments for their course. The students will be expected to serve as mentors for their classmates and assist them in library-related work. The specific nature of the training and support expectations with depend on the requirements of the course and expectations of the instructor. Additionally, the mentor program will be coordinated as much as possible with the Writing Center’s writing studio program, a similar peer learning project. Christina Gola has begun laying the groundwork for collaboration with this group.
