Digital Dissertations

The University of Houston Libraries now provides access to the important research tool Dissertation Abstracts via the Web. Dissertation Abstracts is the most authoritative and comprehensive resource for dissertations, featuring searchable citations to over 1.5 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses from over 1,000 North American graduate schools and European universities. It includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Dissertations published from 1980 to the present also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 to the present include 150-word abstracts. Dissertation Abstracts adds approximately 47,000 new dissertations and 12,000 new master's theses each year. A new and exciting feature in the Web version of Dissertation Abstracts is digital dissertations--UH users can view and print the entire text of all University of Houston dissertations from 1997 to the present in PDF format. Beginning in Spring 1999, users can access the first 24 pages of all non-UH dissertations from 1997 to the present. Complete copies of non-UH dissertations and UH dissertations prior to 1997 can be ordered for a fee. Anyone can use Dissertation Abstracts via the Web in the UH Libraries, and current students, faculty, and staff can also use this and other important electronic resources from their homes and offices. To use the library's databases from outside the library, connect to the following Web address from any UH computer or computer account: http://info.lib.uh.edu/remote/access.htm.
