Citation Management Tools

A citation or reference management tool helps you stay organized when conducting library research and can reduce the time it takes to format in-text citations and bibliographies for your research papers.The UH Libraries supports several of the most popular citation management tools:

EndNote Web is a web-based version of the popular EndNote standalone citation management software.
RefWorks is a web-based citation management tool from ProQuest used at many universities.

Access to both of these tools is provided by the UH Libraries. To create an account, click one of the links above, enter your username and password to authenticate, then follow the instructions to create a personal account.

Once you have created a personal account with either of these services, you can access your account anywhere you have web access without having to authenticate through the Libraries' website.

There are many other citation management tools available. Here are just a few you can explore:

Microsoft WORD 2007 includes citation management functionality. See Inserting a Citation Using WORD 2007 for step-by-step instructions.
EndNote standalone software (installed on your computer); Faculty and Staff can purchase EndNote through the Software IT Page. Students can purchase a copy from the Cougar Byte store in the University Center (lower level).
Zotero is a free Firefox plug-in.
Connotea is a free, web-based citation management tool for "...researchers, clinicians and scientists."
