Housing and Transportation

Houston has many residential neighborhoods, both within the city limits, and in the numerous suburban areas surrounding the city proper. The sprawling nature of the city makes real estate relatively cheap, and you may be surprised at how easy it is to find a home or apartment within your budget. Residents of Houston may easily travel to anywhere in the world, as the city is home to two international airports. However, within the city itself, you may not find it so easy to get around. Due to the explosion in population in the area over the past century, Houston's city limits encompass more than 600 miles (about twice the size of New York City), and, when one includes the entire metropolitan area, this number balloons to almost 9,000 square miles. The city's public transportation system has been unable to keep up with this growth, and thus it is difficult to get around without your own vehicle. However, the city does offer Metro buses, as well as various taxi services, and soon a light rail system.
