Library Privileges

UH students, faculty, and staff borrow materials with their Cougar Card. Alumni borrow materials with UH Alumni Association Cards (see below). Visitors borrow materials with any accepted outside borrowers cards.

Students, faculty, and staff can also apply for a TexShare card in MD Anderson Library to borrow from participating libraries across Texas.

Privileges for faculty

There is no borrowing item limit for faculty.

Faculty and adjunct faculty have unlimited borrowing periods, except for media and reserve items, which have shorter periods. All other materials are due on April 15 of every year and are automatically renewed. Faculty are encouraged to use My Account to periodically review their library account.

Journals may be checked out from MD Anderson Library for 2 day use by faculty.

A free document delivery service and faculty delivery service are available.

A limited number of study rooms and carrels are available for faculty in MD Anderson Library. Please visit the Service Desk or call at (713) 743-9710 for details.

Faculty can recall items checked out to other library users to place them on course reserve.

Faculty are eligible for Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library cards. Applications are available at the Service Desk in MD Anderson Library. Faculty may also apply for an OCLC card to borrow from participating OCLC libraries across the US at the Service Desk.

Privileges for graduate students

Graduate students may borrow up to 250 items at one time. Graduates may borrow up to 10 media items.

General collection materials may be kept for one semester (15 weeks). Reserve items, media items, and other materials will have shorter borrowing periods.

Graduate students may renew checked-out materials as many times as needed unless a hold has been placed on an item. Reserve items, DVD / VHS, laptops, and Leisure Reading books may not be renewed.

A free document delivery service is available for graduate students.

Privileges for undergraduates

Undergraduate students may borrow up to 99 items at one time. Undergraduates may borrow up to 5 media items.

General collection materials may be kept for 6 weeks. Reserve items, media items, and other materials will have shorter borrowing periods.

Students may renew checked-out materials as many times as needed unless a hold has been placed on an item. Reserve items, DVD / VHS, laptops, and Leisure Reading books may not be renewed.

Privileges for alumni

UH Libraries welcomes UH alumni to use library spaces.

UH Alumni Association Cards grant alumni library borrowing privileges. Bring the card to the Service Desk in MD Anderson Library to create a library account.

Privileges include:

  • Borrow up to 30 items
  • Borrow up to 5 media items
  • Six week loan period
  • Unlimited renewals
  • Up to 10 interlibrary loan active transactions at a time

Cards do not include

  • Remote access to electronic resources
  • Borrowing technology equipment
  • Access to group study rooms
  • Borrowing privileges at the Law Library at UH Law Center

Privileges for visitors & community

UH Libraries welcomes visitors and community members to use library spaces.

To borrow materials, visitors will need an accepted outside borrowers card.
