About the Dates:
The dates accompanying the postcards on this web site have been determined through the following means:
- If the date was taken from a copyright notice or postmark on the card itself, the caption will specifically
read "Postmarked" or "Copyright," followed by the year.
- In many other cases, the date was approximated by researching the building or site depicted on the postcard,
using primarily the following research tools:
- The New handbook of Texas. Austin: Texas State Historical Association, 1996. (Online at
http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/).
- Fox, Stephen. Houston architectural guide. Houston, Tex.: American Institute of Architects, Houston Chapter:
Herring Press; Austin, Tex.: distributed by Texas Monthly Press, 1990.
- In some cases, the appearance of the postcard itself gave clues to its date of publication. Information on
dating postcards can be found in the Postcard FAQ, online at
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/lcseiler/faqsec0.htm.
- Some cards produced by the Curt Teich Company were researched using production numbers found printed on the cards.
The corresponding publication dates were identified by the Curt Teich Archives in Wauconda, Illinois, online at
http://www.teicharchives.org.
