Historic Texas Postcards from the George Fuermann Texas and Houston Collection

About the Postcards:

The postcards in the George Fuermann Texas and Houston Collection were donated to the UH Libraries by George Fuermann in 1970, 1974, and 1977 as part of a significant collection of materials on the history of the city of Houston. The postcards on the Historic Texas Postcards web site represent about half of the postcards in the collection, those which could be identified as having been published in 1924 or earlier. A finding aid for the George Fuermann Texas and Houston Collection is available by contacting Spceial Collections at speccol@lib.uh.edu.

Fuermann was a daily editor for the Houston Post from 1950 to 1971, editorial page editor from 1971 to 1983 and wine critic and columnist from 1984 until the Houston Post closed its doors in April of 1995. He is the author of six books on Houston and Texas, editor of a book on early Texas cooking (for which he also wrote the introduction) and author of Tony's, the Cookbook, written in 1986. (Source for biographical information: Hart Galleries catalog, 1996).

All of the postcards displayed on the Historic Texas Postcards web site were published between the years 1898 and 1924, and their images are now in the public domain. Most of the postcards were published by the Curt Teich Company, with some published by Raphael Tuck, S.H. Kress, and other postcard publishers. If you need to know the individual publisher for a specific postcard on the web site, please contact Special Collections.

Every effort has been made to determine the exact date of publication for each postcard in order to comply with copyright laws governing reproduction. If you are aware of a discrepancy in the dating of a particular postcard, please contact Special Collections at speccol@lib.uh.edu.
