Munitz, Barry Allen
UH Affiliation: 1977-1982

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Barry Munitz received a bachelor's degree in classics and comparative literature from Brooklyn College before earning a master's degree and PhD from Princeton University. He began his academic career in 1966 at the University of California, Berkeley, as an assistant professor. From 1968 to 1970 he served at the Carnegie Foundation Commission on Higher Education. In 1970 Dr. Munitz accepted a position at the University of Illinois, where he served for six years, first as associate provost and later as academic vice president for the University of Illinois system. He became Vice President and Dean of Faculties at the University of Houston-Central Campus in 1976 and was made Chancellor in 1977. Munitz left the University of Houston in 1982 to become a senior executive at MAXXAM, Inc. in Houston where he remained until he joined the California State University system in 1991. He was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust in July 1997 and assumed his new post on January 6, 1998.
