The NIH and Open AccessThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) is strongly encouraging researchers who receive NIH grant funding to provide open access to the final, peer-reviewed manuscripts of the journal articles that result from their research. The submission process typically takes 3–10 minutes The NIH has created and operates PubMed Central (PMC), a free digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research literature. (There is delayed free access to some journals in the system.) By submitting their final manuscripts to PubMed Central, researchers can increase the visibility of their research and take advantage of the sophisticated linking and retrieval capabilities of the PubMed Central System.
