DMP Questions

Please use the following list of questions as a guide while working on the Data Management Plan form.

1.1 Briefly describe your data, including data types and amount (if know) that will be created or captured. 

1.2 How will you capture or create the data?

1.3 Some researchers use existing data in their project. Will you be using existing data? Where did you get this data and how does it relate to your project?

2.1 Which file formats will you use for your data, and why?

2.2 To make the data that you capture meaningful what contextual details will be needed?

2.3 How do you plan to capture or create metadata?

2.4 If you plan to use a specific metadata standard, which one do you plan to use and why?

3.1 There are several ways in which to make your data available. All of these ways have resource demands, e.g. equipment, systems (such as databases, websites), expertise, etc. How will you make your data available?

3.2 When will you make the data available? Include details about embargo periods for political/commercial/patent reasons. See your directorate.

3.3 How will others gain access to the data? Will there be a charge or fee for use? Please give details about the reasoning behind charging a fee for use

3.4 Will you as the data collector/creator/PI want to retain the right to use the data before opening it up to wider use? Why?

 3.5 Some datasets are covered by copyright. Is yours? If so, do you own the copyright or other intellectual property? If not, do you plan to license the dataset?

3.6 If PI or co-PI should leave the institution, what provisions will be made for data collected? (Required for Engineering Directorate)

3.7 There are several ways to resolve ethical and privacy issues, such as anonymisation of data, formal consent agreements, and institutional ethical committees. Will your data have ethical or privacy issues? If so, how will you resolve them?

3.8 Does your data fall under the Data Protection Act 1998 or under HIPPA? If you answered "yes", please explain what you are doing to protect 'personal data'.

3.9 Please briefly explain what you have done to comply with your IRB Protocol obligations.

4.1 Will restrictions need to be placed on the data? If you answered "yes", please explain why this data will need permission restrictions or other reasons why this data cannot be shared or re-used.

4.2 Please explain which bodies/groups would be interested in the data? Include intended users or uses of the data.

4.3 Investigators and grantees are encouraged to share software and inventions created under the grant. If this relates to your project, how do you plan to make your products available? (See FAQ for divisions and directorate requirements)

5.1 There are several places that this data can be stored. Please choose the one that best fits your needs: (Personal responsibility, UH Libraries, Professional Society or research entity or data center, Other, Nplans to preserve or provide access to materials. ) If you have chosen an archive, repository, data center or central database in which to deposit your data please indicate which one:

5.2 Please explain your strategy for maintaining, curating and archiving the data?:
