Technology Training

The University of Houston Libraries now offers a series of technology training courses open to all UH students, faculty and staff.

Courses cover Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, and content are tailored for basic, intermediate and advanced skill levels. More courses will be added to the rotation, including training on software such as Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and other commonly-used programs.

Sessions run for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the topic and skill level, and most sessions will take place in the Learning Commons training areas. Requests for group training will be considered in the future.

The full training calendar is posted online (below) and is updated on a monthly basis. Seating is limited to about 15 people per session and currently first come, first serve basis.

Topics Details

Microsoft® Word 2010 & 2013

Microsoft Word is a word- processing program. This application can be used to create, edit, and format documents such as letters, memos, reports, brochures, resumes, and flyers. Word also provides tools for creating tables, which organize information into rows and columns. Using Word, you can add graphics, which consist of pictures, online pictures, SmartArt, shapes, and charts that can enhance the look of your documents.

Microsoft® Excel 2010 & 2013

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program. Excel is a two- dimensional grid that can be used to model quantitative data and perform accurate and rapid calculations with results ranging from simple budgets to financial and statistical analyses. Data entered into Excel can be used to generate a variety of charts such as pie charts, bar charts, line charts, or scatter charts, to name a few, to enhance spreadsheet data. Excel files are known as workbooks, which contain one or more worksheets. Excel makes it possible to analyze, manage, and share information, which can also help you make better and smarter decisions. New analysis and visualization tools help you track and highlight important data trends.

Microsoft® Access 2010 & 2013

Microsoft Access is a relational database management program. Access is a three-dimensional database program that allows you to make the most of your data. Access is known as relational database software— or three- dimensional database software— because it is able to connect data in separate tables. Access connects the data through relationships formed from common fields that exist in both tables.

Microsoft® PowerPoint 2010 & 2013

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation and slide program. This application can be used to create slide shows for a presentation, as part of a website, or as a stand- alone application on a computer kiosk. These presentations can also be printed as handouts.

Adobe CS6

Topics Details

Adobe Photoshop CS6

Adobe PhotoShop is a graphics program that you can use to edit and create graphics. Adobe PhotoShop can also be used to edit photographs, and most other forms of computer graphics.

PhotoShop is a sophisticated image manipulating program. It's features include the ability to crop, balance colors and tones, and format pictures
